Santa Monica Pier Gets Ready to Celebrate Its 100 Year Anniversary

Posted: Feb 02, 2009 | Comments: 0 | Views: 441 | Bookmark and Share

Opened in 1909, the Santa Monica Pier has a yearlong celebration for its 100th anniversary that will lead up to a climax on the 9th of September. There are many activities that can be pursed here.

The Santa Monica Pier was opened to the public on September 9th, 1909 following 16 months of building.  Over a 1000 people had gathered here to witness the opening of this magnificent pier, the pier was 1, 600 feet long and was made of concrete. The opening involved a fun day with swimming races and bands playing, and a walk above the water of the Pacific Ocean. The pier was initially constructed to serve for sanitation purposes of the city. In 1923 the Santa Monica Pier was sold to an amusement company that went by the name the Santa Monica Amusement Company.

1933 saw the formation of the Santa Monica Yacht Harbor. The harbour became the central location for a transport service to an offshore gambling area. The operations were carried out by the thug Tony Cornero. In 1939 Attorney General Earl Warren championed a legal effort to close this down. The last ship, the Rex was taken down in the famous “Battle of Santa Monica Bay”. Finally Cornero surrendered subsequent to a 3 day confrontation, because he “needed a haircut”.

There are numerous activities to do at the Santa Monica Pier. A year long celebration is being held for the 100th anniversary that will culminate on the 9th of September 2009. There are games and great spots to sightsee. There are rope courses, flying and static trapeze, trampoline, aerial silks, medieval sword fighting, acrobatic yoga and professional aerial and acrobatic shows.

A stay a day or two in the area at a Beverly Hills hotel would be a good idea. And for the luxury enthusiast why not even try a luxury hotel in Beverly Hills such as Raffles L'Ermitage, Beverly Hills. A stay would enable one to have a better experience of the area.
