The Skilled Independent Migrant Visa or Subclass 175 allows you to move permanently to Australia as an immigrant. This visa uses a point system to qualify applicants required by the Australian labour market.
This Australian visa does not require employer sponsorship. However, the criteria for eligibility include good English language skills and qualifications that meet the Australian standard for jobs on the Skilled Occupation List (SOL). Applicants must also be under the age of 45.
The Points Test
After meeting basic eligibility requirements, the applicant must then pass the points test. The passing mark for this visa for Australia is 120 points. The following will be needed to assess your points:
Age – points allotted to age varies per group. For instance those in the range of 18 to 29 get 30 points, but those nearing the cutoff only get 15. Evidence to prove age is needed as part of the application.
English Language Proficiency – Your level of English can earn you from 15 to 25 points. Proficiency is proven by the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) report.
Nominated skilled occupation – You must nominate a job on the Skilled Occupation List that is relevant to your skills and work experiences. After such, you need to obtain a positive skills assessment from a relevant authority before submitting your Australian visa application. Points earned from your nominated occupation and corresponding required skill can be as low as 40 points and as high as 60 points.
Benefits of Permanent Residents
Holders of this Australia visa can live and work in the country on a permanent basis, which means they can remain in Australia indefinitely. Entry and exit is allowed for five years from the date the visa is granted.
Study in an Australian school or university is also allowed. Australian visa holders of this type can also receive Medicare benefits and subsidised healthcare from the Pharmaceutical Benefit Scheme, get access to social security payments, sponsor others for permanent residency and eventually be eligible for Australian citizenship.
