The Star Ferry is a passenger transport ferry system that operates in Hong Kong. The primary route that the Star Ferry travels is between Kowloon and Hong Kong Island, travelling through the Victoria Harbour. It is believed that Dorabjee Naorojee Mithaiwala, an Indian Parsee entrepreneur who lived in Hong Kong, started the Star Ferry service. At the time the Star Ferry service was called the Kowloon Ferry Company and was founded in 1888. The Kowloon Ferry Company was renamed the Star Ferry Company in 1898.
The Star Ferry Company operates twelve ferries that travel across Victoria Harbour. The names of these Ferries are, Morning Star built in 1888, Celestial Star built in 1956, Meridian Star built in 1958, Solar Star built in 1958, Northern Star built in 1959, Night Star built in 1963, Day Star built in 1964, Shining Star built in 1964, Twinkling Star built in 1964, Morning Star built in 1965, Silver Star built in 1965, Golden Star built in 1989 and World Star built in 1989. There was also an ex-British Army vessel which was renamed Glowing Star and was rented by Star Ferry Company between the years 2001 and 2005. The Star Ferry Company also own a tug boat called Kowloon.
One can get to see much of Victoria Harbour while travelling in the Star Ferries. In addition the Star Ferries offer a panoramic view of Hong Kong from Victoria Harbour. Many photographs have been taken of Hong Kong from this special viewpoint. The Star Ferries also provide a means of transportation between the Hong Kong islands.
While travelling in Hong Kong it would be a good idea to stay at a Kowloon hotel. The Langham Hotel Hong Kong would be a good place to stay; it is among the leading luxury hotels in Hong Kong.
