Sun Peaks Accomodations: Nancy Greene’s Accomplishments

As an Olympic medalist, successful commercial entrepreneur and recently inaugurated Canadian Senator, Nancy Greene is the exemplar of an accomplished Canadian athlete and role model. Gaining international attention with her gold medal performance at the 1968 Olympic games in Grenoble, Nancy continued to inspire and impress skiers and non-skiers alike with numerous World Cup victories and Championship titles .

After a nine year racing career, Nancy retired from amateur racing and directed her attention on improving the quality of the Canadian ski environment. This article distinguishes some of Nancy’s major accomplishments and contributions to Canadian ski communities, her role in the growth of some of British Columbia’s major ski resorts and her investment in Whistler and Sun Peaks accomodations.

Post-Racing Profession: Improving the BC Ski Environment

Following a lucrative promotional career with Rossignal Ski Company and several endorsement campaigns with renowned brands such as Mars Bars and Pontiac, Nancy diverted her focus to enhancing the Canadian ski experience. Both Nancy and husband, Al Raine, adored B.C’s snow capped mountains and saw great promise for the development of major ski resorts. They concentrated first on developing Whistler, determined to turn it into a key ski destination. While Al became involved in the planning process of Whistler Village, Nancy made use of her savvy business skills and high profile athlete status to attract investors and visitors to the maturing mountain resort.

In 1985, the couple built Nancy Greene’s Olympic Lodge, one of Whistler’s earliest hotels whose success marked a defining moment in Whistler’s investment climate. Although Nancy and Al decided to sell the hotel in 1988, they stayed active members of the ski community in Whistler, either volunteering as race officials or assisting on committees for the International Ski Federation.

Sun Peaks Accomodations: A New Challenge

After a successful endeavour in Whistler, Nancy and Al embarked on a new ski destination, Sun Peaks Resort in the interior of British Columbia. In 1995, the couple were among the very first to construct and invest in Sun Peaks accomodations, building their first condominium hotel in Sun Peaks village, Nancy Greene’s Cahilty Lodge. Nancy is still a big part of promotion and publicising in Sun Peaks accomodations today. She has since been appointed Director of Skiing at Sun Peaks Resort and makes sure to ski with visitors at every opportunity.

Above and Beyond the Ski Hill

Other than her position as Director of Skiing at Sun Peaks resort, Nancy also employs the role of Chancellor at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, British Columbia. In December, 2008, she was appointed to the Canadian Senate on the reference and approval of Prime Minister, Stephen Harper himself. It is evident that Nancy is truly an inspiration, her undying dedication, perseverance and Olympic drive will leave a lasting impression on skiers and non-skiers alike.
