The Historic Beauty of Croatia Holidays

Croatia holidays are a mixture of colour and life, a bit like this area’s enigmatic history. Dating back to the early seventh century, the Croats arranged the state into two dukedoms, but by the end of AD 925 the first King had been crowned and Croatia’s status was elevated to Kingdom, which it retained for nearly two centuries.

In 1102 Croatia entered a union with Hungary, and then declared independence from the then Austria-Hungary in 1918, co-founding the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. Croatia became a founding member of the second Yugoslavia after the Second World War and in June 1991, again declared independence and became a sovereign state. The period known as the Homeland War followed with borders being fiercely fought over and boundaries marked. Thousands of lives were lost and buildings destroyed and it wasn’t until 1995 that the Croatia we know and love today started to emerge once again as a beautiful country and popular holiday destination.

Croatia holidays will see you visiting the beautiful southeast area of Europe on the edge of the Adriatic Sea. Croatia neighbours Hungary and Slovenia to the north, Bosnia and Herzegovina to the southeast and Serbia and Montenegro to the east. It has over 1,100 miles of stunning mainland coastline and over 1,000 islands of which only 47 are inhabited.

The historic walled cities of Split, Dubrovnik and Trogir are all UNESCO World Heritage sites and are as beautiful as they are historic. The islands of Brac, Hvar and Korcula create a picture perfect holiday scene, ensuring Croatia holidays are the perfect mixture of beautiful scenery, and cultural history.

Croatia holidays enjoy a wonderful warm summer with temperatures often in the high eighties, while winter months along the coast can still see four or five hours of sunshine a day. The local currency is the Kuna, making Croatia holidays extremely good value for money as they usually have a very favourable exchange rate against the British pound.
