The History of Blackpool Pleasure Beach

Blackpool Pleasure Beach is one of the major attractions that Blackpool has to offer. Blackpool has been one of the main seaside holiday resorts where British families flock each year for some traditional British fun. The Golden Mile starts from the famous Blackpool Tower and ends at Blackpool Pleasure Beach- the ultimate ending of this famous walk. The Pleasure Beach is many families’s favourite day out, which is easy to see why. The theme park’s history and original rides teamed with the new, exciting and world-renowned attractions is why the park is still so popular- over 100 years later.

Alderman William George Bean founded the Pleasure Beach in 1896 after he bought the 42 acres of land where the park now sits. Several rides were placed there over the following years, including the Sir Hiram Maxim Flying Machines which was a big hit with its visitors. The Pleasure Beach’s popularity started to grow, as did investments in the park, however its growth was halted by World War I. Being unable to import parts for new rides and rollercoaster’s from America, the theme park just stood as it was until 1921 when it was possible to import again.

The 1930’s saw a massive rejuvenation of the Pleasure Beach. This decade saw the arrival of the Roller Coaster and the extremely famous two-track rollercoaster The Grand National; where two carriages race around the track together. The fast developing Pleasure Beach was again halted with the arrival of World War II. Even though a holiday was the last thing on most of the population’s mind, the owners still kept the Pleasure Beach open throughout the duration of the war, hoping that the laid-back and fun atmosphere of the park would better people’s spirits.

It would be a long time until The Pleasure Beach would see more development. The 1960’s saw a change of management, and therefore a new and fresh development plan. This decade saw the arrival of the Log Flume and the Astro Swirl. Not long after in the 70’s, even more of the park’s staple rides appeared, such as The Avalanche (Europe’s only bobsleigh ride) and the Revolution. The Pleasure Beach’s popularity soared with the arrival of these new rides, but it wasn’t until 1994 until the Pleasure Beach secured itself onto a global map. The Pepsi Max Big One was developed, the highest and fastest rollercoaster in the world. Rollercoaster enthusiasts from all over flocked to Blackpool for a ride on its £12 million investment. This attraction made further investments like Valhalla and the Spin Doctor possible, and is the reason why the park pulls in over 6.2 million visitors per year.

If visiting the Pleasure Beach, there are hundreds of hotels in Blackpool to choose from. If you search online you will be sure to find a cheap hotel, as this Market is very competitive here. There is also a huge range of Bed and Breakfasts to choose from, so choose wisely!
