Mongkok is a densely populated urban area which is full of activity and vibrancy. The neon lights, the river like crowds which slowly move through out the city and the modern skyscrapers are some of the identities of the present Mongkok. But yester years are much calmer and quieter in Mongkok because it was a place of vast paddy cultivation and the location of the area is much more different than today. After the lapse of time and due to high frequency modernization, Mongkok has been turned in to a city with great importance in whole Hong Kong.
Mongkok is the Chinese word with the meaning of flourishing or busy corner. True to its name today, the city is the centre of many fairs, markets, shops and boutiques in the region. For example, Ladies Street is a market which comprises of shops with ladies clothing accessories and cosmetics and there are midnight snacks and other small fast foods corners also available in the area.
Sai Yeung Choi Street South is a market which specializes in consumer electronics, discounted books and cosmetics. The Temple Street is more sort of a place full of Hong Kong specific goods. Fa Yuen Street on the other hand sells mostly sport shoes and clothing. It has a wide variety of products and most of the items are special editions of different brands which are rare and valuable.
Bird Garden which is a main tourist attraction in Mangkok, is full of hundreds of song birds in specially crafted cages for sale. The garden usually opens from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and it is really close by to the Mongkok MTR station. Goldfish Market is another place that a traveler should visit where as the market is specialized in selling tropical fresh water marine fish.
After the lengthy walk in these markets, travelers can enjoy a fast snack in many curb side food booths. They offer food items such as fish balls, fried bean curd and dum sum. If the visitors are looking for much fuller meal they can go for one of the Chinese, Thai or Italian restaurants which are in numbers throughout the vicinity.
Langham Place Hotel Hong Kong, a 5 star hotel in Hong Kong is located right in the middle of Mangkok and the guests can get a first hand experience of the local activities while enjoying a luxurious stay.
