The old saying that "the early bird gets the worm" this is seldom truer than when trying to find the cheapest rates on an airline. The fact is airline prices are rising, and you need to be prepared to get the best rate available. You can no longer simply rely on securing flight tickets at least 14 days before your vacation. Now you will do considerably better to buy your tickets at least three months in advance. This will almost assure you the best rates because many airlines offer discounts for flying early. The most comfortable seating will go quickly, so you will do well to plan your airline reservation as soon as you know you are going on vacation.
To get the least expensive rate, travel during the weekdays, specifically Monday through Wednesday. You can also get an additional discount if you have a Saturday layover. For example, your best rate would be if you leave on a Monday and also come back on a Monday one or more weeks later. Flying during the weekends can cost as much as $40.00 more per ticket. Also, a trip that lasts a shorter period of time can result in a round trip flight more expensive than if you were to stay at least seven days.
The most expensive calendar times to travel are during peak seasons. This includes any holidays, especially Christmas and Thanksgiving when the airlines know that a flood of people are traveling anyway. Traveling during the off seasons, such as summer, will not only get you a cheaper rate, but will also help you enjoy a smoother flight because there will more likely be less crowding in the airport and on the airplane itself.
An easy way to save money if you don't mind some inconvenience is to lock in a connecting flight when you book your reservation. A non-stop flight is normally a much higher cost than if you have a connecting flight, or at least a flight that makes a stop along the way. This is a great idea if you don't have a lot of luggage or aren't on a big time crunch to get to your destination.
Try to take advantage of available discounts as well. For example, some airlines offer discounted seats for senior citizens and students. People with children under the age of two can also avoid buying a seat for their child and hold them on their lap if they want to save a little extra money.
Finally, look around at your flight options and compare to find your optimal choices. The Internet is the most convenient means of doing a search because it is convenient and you can check frequently. If you aren't comfortable purchasing from an Internet site, then you can always check the travel section of your local newspaper for great deals that may even include a hotel room and rental car.
By taking the time to compare and following the tips above, you should be able to secure a price for your flight that will make you smile.
