Diani and Ukunda urban centers are located in coast province, Msambweni District 30 Kilometers south of Mombasa town.Ukunda urban centre is a few kilometers off the coast while Diani is on the white pristine sandy beaches of Indian Ocean. These towns have attractive tourist destinations that favor most adventures visiting the coast. They hugely rely on tourism activities.
Diani is on the beach and has most of major hotels, lodges ,villas and cottages. This is centre has more business activities than Ukunda town. This urban centre too has no development master plans and therefore lack quality infrastructure to support the ever growing tourism industry in the area.
Some of the major hotels in Diani include, Safari Beach Hotel, Africana Sea Lodge, Alliance Hotels and Resorts, Jadini Beach Hotel. Jadini is the oldest in the region and was built as a cottage in 1937.Jacaranda Indian Ocean Beach resort is on the Northern tip of Diani beach, Leisure Golf Club with a 18 hole championship golf course.
Others hotels in Diani include Banda hotel built in year 1920 by white settlers. The hotel has latter changed to Jadini Beach Hotel while Sandy Hotel is now known as Tradewinds Hotel.
Recreational activities on Diani Beach include kite surfing, scuba diving, sailing ,fishing and many more. Hotels in this area offers arranged exclusive tours to the Kaya sacred forests where various rare birds are found. Tours to the marine parks and mangrove forests can also be arranged. Other excursions include an hour’s drive to the Shiba Hills National Game reserve and Mwaluganje Elephant sanctuary.
Diani has modern banking and commercial facilities like shopping malls and supermarkets unlike Ukunda urban centre that mostly houses locals working on the hotels in Diani. Most locals are fishermen while others work at the various tourist establishments in Diani.
Diani beach is accessible by road from Mombasa through Likoni Ferry service or by air landing at the Ukunda Airstrip then by road to Ukunda.
