Varna is the third largest city in Bulgaria and the biggest city on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. It has a good infrastructure, moderate continental climate, a 17m wide beach, 12 hydrothermal springs, balneological and cultural center, and fast developing seaside. The city is a preferred destination for Bulgarians and many tourists from around the world. It also offers a great variety of Christian Orthodox attractions for those interested in history and religion:
1. The Cathedral Uspenie Presviatia Bogorodici founded in 1896 and built after the model of the ´Peterhovskia´ temple in St. Peterburg. It is situated on a big square surrounded by a beautiful garden;
2. The Orthodox temple ´St. Bogorodica Panagia´ founded in 1602 in the Aiazmoto area. It was built low in the ground because of legal restrictions that existed during the Otoman Rule - Orthodox temples couldn´t be higher than 2 meters;
3. The Orthodox temple ´St. Atanasii´ founded in 1838. It is situated near the Roman therms and is a museum for ancient icons today;
4. The Orthodox temple ´St. Nikolai´ founded in 1865. It is the only sea temple in Bulgaria;
5. The Orthodox temple ´St. Paraskeva Petka´ founded in 1906;
6. The Armenian Orthodox temple ´St. Sarkis´ founded in 1844. The temple is in the shape of a cross;
7. The Aladja monastery complex, located 17km from Varna: a rock cloister, Aladja monastery is situated in a rock massif which is almost 40 meters high and is part of a big group of natural caves. Original mediavel wall-paintings are preserved.
8. The Catacombs - which are anchoretic cells and tombs of monks on three levels. It is dated from the Early Christian era(IV-VIc.) They are situated in another group of caves;
9. A museum which is a restoration of the Aladja monastery and ´The Catacombs´. There are icons, church belongings, and floor mosaics from the second Early Christian basilica found on ´Khan Krum´ street.
Varna is easily accessible from most European capitals via its international airport.
