Kigali is the home to the Genocide Museum which documents the 100-day massacre of 1994. You can spend a few hours here as you learn about the massacre that claimed many lives. On the east of the country is Kibungu which is in the centre of a region of lakes and waterfalls including Lake Mungesera and the Rumuso Falls. Gissenyi is the main centre for excursions in the Parc des Volcans and planes can be taken from here to view the craters. Situated on the north of Lake Kivu, it also offers many opportunities for water sports or for excursions on the lake. Kibuye, further south is another lakeside resort and near Cyangugu on the southern shores of the lake are the magnificent grottoes of Kaboza and Nyenj. There are also the thermal waters at Nyakabuye while nearby the Rugege forest is the home of many rare species of wildlife. Apart from Nyakabuye there are other places that you can get close to Rwanda’s fantastic wildlife and these places include the A’Kagera National Park that covers over 2,500 square kilometres of savannah to the west of the A’Kagera River. There are a variety of animals in this park and it also serves as habitat to more than five hundred species of birds with the easiest point of access being Kabarando. Embark on a gorilla trek at the Parc national des Volcans which is currently guarded by military units who ensure the safety of visitors. After this, you can also go climbing the Virunga Volcanoes between Ruhengeri and Gisenyi and the Nyiragongo in Democratic Republic of Congo is easily climbed from Gisenyi. The entertainment in Rwanda is fantastic as there are several cinemas in Kigali like the Rwanda National Ballet which is famous for traditional dancing and singing. There are several nightclubs which have African, Congolese and Western music in addition to the music bars with food and dancing available. After having a wonderful time at the clubs, you can have a great night sleep in the many types of accommodations available in Rwanda. Hotels are found mostly in Kigali and they are expensive but there are other new hotels in Rwanda at reasonable prices. Missions with dormitory accommodations are also available particularly in remote districts and smaller towns. You can visit Rwanda anytime as there are no season changes and activities take place throughout the year.
