A Latin navigator, sailing for France, discovered New York Bay in 1524. In 1609 northern New York was explored and occupied by French. The first permanent settlement occurred in 1624 at Fort Orange (now Albany) was done by Dutch and the very next year they bought Manhattan Islands from the Indians. They founded a Dutch colony of New Amsterdam (now New York) which was seized by British forces.
The colony became a state on 26 July 1788. After it adopted the US Constitution, New York was planned as Capitol of US and President Washington took his oath here on 30 April 1789. During American Revolution, New York has witnessed one third of total American battles. It also saw the christening of American Flag.
A very famous New York building, Empire State Building that ascends a quarter of a mile from the ground and is considered a National Historic Landmark that has been visited by billions of visitors till date.

Located in New York's harbor The Statue of Liberty is a present from the people of France given to US on 28th October 1886 as a universal symbol of freedom and democracy. Nearby an island has been combined with this statue and most of the immigrants coming to US in 19th and 20th centuries were firstly legally and medically inspected on this island called Ellis Island. The main building on this island was turned into a museum about the history of immigrants. Bennington Battlefield State Historic Site was the place where British forces invaded America in August 1777 to expand their kingdom, but suffered major losses and surrendered on 17 October 1777. Additional amenities at this site include game fields.
Crailo State Historic Site was built in the early 18th century. In the late 18th century it served as boys hostel and later as a church. All changes brought some changes in its structure.
Finally, it got donated to New York to develop it as a museum in 1924. Guided tours are available to see the story of early Dutch settlements and it highlights the evacuation from Albany Fort Orange.
One of the most significant battles for independence was fought at Oriskany Battlefield State Historic Site on 6th August, 1777 and is considered to be the bloodiest of the whole war. In memory of those who passed away during this atrocious battle, a monument was designated on 6th August 1884.
