North Yorkshire is a shire or non metropolitan county that is of course located in Yorkshire and the Humber area of England. Largest ceremonial county of England that lies partly in this area and partly in North East England is spread in an area of 3,341 sq miles or 8,654 sq km.
As a result of the Local Government Act 1972, North Yorkshire came into existence on 1 April 1974. It is spread on most of the area of the ancient North Riding, the northern, the northern half of the West Riding, eastern fringes of the East Riding of Yorkshire and also the previous county borough of York.
York was made a unitary authority, which was free of North Yorkshire on 1 April 1996 and simultaneously Cleveland, Middlesbrough, Redcar and some areas of Stockton on Tees that lied south of the river became a part of North Yorkshire for ceremonial functions. Earlier from 1974 to 1996, they used to be a part of Cleveland.
The area that is controlled by the county council is distributed into several local government districts like Craven, Harrogate, Hambleton, Ryedale, Scarborough Selby and Richmondshire. The largest area where people mostly settled in the administrative county is Harrogate, while it is York, in the ceremonial county. Aplenty of functions, which are made from part of the ceremonial county like the Lord Lieutenant of North Yorkshire as these do not come under the control of county council are celebrated by the unitary authorities of Redcar and Cleveland, Middlesbrough and York.
Stockton on Tees is divided between County Durham and North Yorkshire, little distinctive for a district of England. This is reason why Middlesbrough, Cleveland, Stockton on Tees and Redcar and other boroughs create a part of the North East England area. The county region, with its unitary authorities, shares its borders with County Durham, Cumbria, East Riding of Yorkshire, West Yorkshire, South Yorkshire and Lancashire.
Two national parks are created in this English countryside in between North Yorkshire where there is North York Moors and majority of the Yorkshire Dales. Vales of Mowbray and York lie in between the Pennine Hills in the west and the North York Moors in the east, with Vale of Pickering lying to the south. The apex point is Whernside, located on the Cumbrian border, at 2,414 feet or 736 m. The county is also decorated with four main rivers, River Ure, River Ouse, River Tees and River Swale.
Several places attract the visitors egg York Minister, Yorkshire Air Museum, Studley Royal Park, Ampleforth College, Bolton Abbey, Byland Abbey - English Heritage, Bolton Castle, Cleveland Hills, Drax, Fountains Abbey, Light water Valley, Malham Cove, Wharram Percy, Whitby Abbey and many more.
Only two major motorways pass through North Yorkshire and these are the A1 M and the A66 M. M62 motorway also passes through North Yorkshire, very near to Eggborough. The East Coast Main Line, the North TransPennine and the newly-formed Grand Central London to Sunderland line are the major railway lines that run throughout the county. York is the largest station in the county with 11 platforms.
