Windmills in Holland

Since 16th century, numerous Dutch live in the lake floor of old century. So, many windmills were used to pump water to keep the bottom of lake in dry. In those low-lying areas, windmills were the important factor to manage water resources. According to the report, the biggest windmill could lift water with 10,000 gallons to the height of 4 inches under the normal wind speed each minute.

It can't be interpreted that when the first windmill was built in Holland, however, the windmills were driven by rivers and streams couldn't be seen anywhere until the year of 1274.

In 1414, the windmill was invented for drainage. And around 1450, the windmill could be seen everywhere. The windmill, maybe introduced from Middle East instead of Holland in the East Expedition Times by Crusades. Apparently, Holland deserves the contribution of development of windmill, the reason of which is there is no country can compared to the variety of windmills that Holland has. Although, the uses of windmill was over as soon as the appearance of technology, like steam engine, internal-combustion engine and electro-motor, all of which are used to doing the work instead of wind energy and water energy. So windmills were dismantled and to be an storage place for there was no more valuable. There are only 3,000 windmills had survived from 10,000s until 1923, but nowadays, the number decreased continually to 1,000. Fortunately, at present, many monuments are preserved in good condition, some of which are opened to public at regular time.

In countryside of Holland, there are two kinds of mills: watermill and windmill.

Watermills are often seen in east and south Holland, for there are enough water to push it running. Watermills are used as grain mills in usual, and to produce paper, extract oil and cut wood as well. At present, over 70 watermills has been preserved in Holland.

Windmills also have two categories: industrial windmill and drained windmill. Industrial windmill is named by its usages, like cutting wood windmill, however, most are replaced by modern technology. Drained windmills are used for preventing the land from cumulating much more water, so polders are formed.

Some windmills are still working in ancient polders. There are only 1,000 windmills left until now, which distribute in 12 provinces of Holland, and most are lies in Zuid Holland. For more information about traveling; please have a look at http://www.affordable-cruises-tours.com.
