Year Round Holidays in Lanzarote

Although the language is predominantly Spanish, Lanzarote, the fourth largest of the Canary Islands, is less than 100 miles off the coast of Africa to which it owes the benefits of its fine climate.

Just 60kms long and 20km wide Lanzarote enjoys a year round warm climate with daytime temperatures ranging between 21 deg and 28 deg and an annual rainfall of less than 6 inches making this an ideal destination for an off-season break using one of a number of with a cheap flight providers that service the destination.

Lanzarote is volcanic in origin, as are all the Canary Islands, with eruptions as recent as the 19th century which gives the Island a "lunar" type landscape which has changed very little over the years due to the dry climate and little erosion. Worth a visit are the caves of Los Verdes formed 3000 years ago during one of the eruptions which include the longest volcanic tunnel in the world, underwater caves that are still not fully explored and one part of the cave which is sometimes used as a concert hall.

Lanzarote has an interesting range of beaches from the white sands of the North of the island, the golden sands of Puerto Del Carmen and the famous black sands of Playa Quemada. If surfing is your choice then the coast in the west is famous for its surfing beaches but with the force of the Atlantic it is a challenge for the more adept surfers and not ideal for beginners or the fainthearted. The white beaches in the north, created by the sand blown across from Africa are also renowned for their surfing and many top surfers can be found riding the waves here.

For other sport lovers Lanzarote is home to Club La Santa which is used as a base by many top triathletes, runners and cyclists who take advantage of the cheap sports orientated package holidays to Lanzarote. As an all year round training camp the climate is perfect and the quiet but challenging roads are ideal for training away from mainland Europe. You can see why its an attraction during the cooler spring and autumn months, particularly for sports stars based in the cooler climates of northern Europe. But you don't have to be a top athlete to enjoy the sports facilities of Lanzarote as there are also golf courses, diving schools, deep sea fishing, jet skiing and parasailing.

There is a wide choice of accommodation on Lanzarote from a number of 4 and 5 Star hotels to self catering apartments situated in the popular coastal resorts. Puerto del Carmen is the busiest resort with its huge beach, numerous bars, restaurants and clubs to cater for all tastes and ages but also an old town for a glimpse of the past. Puerto Calero is different, quieter with less activities, it is a more exclusive resort based around a marina and has some top quality hotel accommodation.

There are many church festivals in Lanzarote, the major faith being Catholic and there are other festivals most months. The traditional music of the island is folklore music and the popular instrument is the timple, a ukulele type of instrument introduced to the island by slaves in the 15th century, all long before the island became a popular holiday destination. The holiday resorts are only a recent addition, since affordable flights to the island became available. Lanzarote Arrecife airport boasts an exceptional, newly constructed terminal providing all the facilities and comfort travellers have come to expect.

So for an ideal location for a year round holiday, be it activity based or just lazing in the sun, Lanzarote has a lot to offer and is just a 4 hour flight from the UK.
