Hiring a car whilst on your family holiday can be a tricky process with a myriad of extra charges to look out for.
In this short guide I will give you the knowledge to find the right car without spending over the odds – whilst ensuring you have adequate cover should something go wrong.
Firstly you need to decide which car is most suitable for your circumstances. The smaller the car you hire – the cheaper the price. Is a 4x4 absolutely necessary for a family of 3? Hiring such a big car could potentially cost you double the price.
To make things a little easier and cut the cost of your car hire you should consider using an internet based comparison service which can cut out a lot of the legwork. Hiring a car in resort can be more costly and leave you open to a minefield of unknown charges.
Another factor to consider when choosing a vehicle from a car rentals company is insurance. You will usually receive a basic level of cover as standard and the company are required by law to provide a roadworthy vehicle.
You will normally find you have a large excess to pay in the case of an accident and will usually only receive basic cover. You will most probably not be covered for eventualities such as injury or death by accident and damage to the windows, tires and body work.
However please be aware that many car hire companies and agents will offer a “fully inclusive” price at a special rate.
If you are under 25 you should be aware that you may have to pay a young drivers surcharge which could escalate the price by hundreds. There is unfortunately little you can do about this, although shopping around may see the price drop between differing providers.
Last but not least we come to fuel and in particular the usual requirement to return the car with a full tank. Should you leave yourself with too little time to fill up or fail to fill to the full mark you will usually be charged a penalty fee. You may be able to make arrangements to return the car with a less than full tank in return for a small payment so this is worth considering.
The process of hiring a car needn’t be a stressful one – follow the guidelines above and everything should run that little bit smoother.
