If you’re worried about driving a car hire Aruba is a great place to hone your international driving skills. Driving a car hire in Aruba is easy and will seem very natural after about 20 minutes.
Keep the following tips in mind.
1. Arubans drive on the right side of the road. This is the “right” side of the road to most people from the western hemisphere.
2. Aruba has one main road–1A–that goes from the southern tip to the northern tip. When you hit Oranjestad, it’s called Lloyd G. Smith Blvd.
3. A few roads go off this one, but they probably won’t be labeled. Eventually, most of them circle back around to 1A.
4. Get a road map from your Aruba car hire.
5. The signage uses the European international signage system. What this means for you is, no English. Read your map and know what the pictures mean. In some cases, there may be signs written in Dutch. Keep in mind that “verboden” translates to something like “no”. This usually means no parking. The airport signs are blue and say, “Reina Beatrix”.
6. The speed limit in town is 40km/h unless otherwise posted. If you’re rural, it’s 60km/h.
7. Watch out for the wildlife. Well, it’s not so wild. Actually, the goats are quite domesticated. If you run into a herd, they won’t wait for you. Just be patient. On the other hand, the donkeys aren’t quite as street smart.
Driving a car hire around Aruba is flexible and fun. There are many different options depending on your tastes. Maybe you want to roll up to the casinos and nightclubs in style. Pick a BMW or Lexus for this. If you want to go on the back roads of Aruba try a 4×4 Jeep. Whatever you choose, you can’t lose.

Aruba is the only resort destination that I’ve been to where renting a car makes more sense than taking a quick cab ride. Cabs are expensive here, and they don’t drive far from the beaten path. Don’t be taken for a ride–just lease your car in Aruba. A whole new world opens up filled with fun, culture, and flexibility.
