He is also a contributor to http://www.bangkokguestfriendlyhotels.comWhat do all first time visitors to Bangkok's red light districts have in common? Most have been ripped off because they do not know about bar girl's rates and tricks. Go into any bar in Bangkok and meet up with some like minded travelers from all over the world and you'll certainly hear many similar stories. Here you'll learn some simple tips to help you keep your hard earned money from the wretched hands of unscrupulous go go bars.
Most first time visitors to Bangkok's go go bars make one common mistake. They come in stand and around with their jaws dropped and eyes as wide as saucers. That's the first mistake and is a sure sign that you're a newbie.
If you find a go go bar you like make sure you walk inside with purpose. Try to look like you're a regular. Don't worry, with so many faces passing through those doors they will never remember your face. It's best to sit down near the front of the stage if there's a seat available. That's where all the prettiest girls group up so they can lure men walking by the entrance.
Once you take a seat you're required to order a drink. Go go bars will only allow you to sit for a few minutes and will ask you to leave if you don't buy. Beers in go go bars are expensive but cheaper then in a bar in the West. A local beer called Singha will cost about 110 Baht
Usually go go bars have dozens of girls dancing on stage, especially the popular ones like Angelwitch in Nana Entertainment Plaza or Spice Girls in Soi Cowboy. When you see a girl you like you can give her a long eye contact or wave at her to take a seat with you. Alternatively she has a number on her bikini and by telling the Mamasan the bar girl will be with you in a flash.
When she sits down you're required to buy her a lady drink for her time. These drinks usually consist of a watered down cola shared by many girls. Lady drinks in Bangkok's go go bars hover around 100 Baht to 135 Baht. If you don't like her she'll know and eventually scurry off back to the stage. If you do like her and want to take her out you have to pay a bar fine. Bar fines in Bangkok's red light districts are usually 500 Baht to 600 Baht. A bar fine is paid along with your drink bill to the go go bar.
But before you even think about the bar fine you have to negotiate how much a bar girl will charge you for her services.
Here's the key moment and point which will determine how much you will get charged. She will ask you how many times you've been to a go go bar. Tell her you've been to many go go bars before. Tell her you live and work in Thailand. Even if it's not true you have to give her the impression that you know how much you should be charged.
For short time (1 hour) the going bar girl rate is 1500 Baht. Some might charge only 1000 Baht if she knows she's ugly and needs money. The pretty bar girls might charge 2000 Baht because they know people will pay but you should never pay more than that.
For long time (overnight) the going bar girl rate is between 2500 Baht to 5000 Baht. But this really depends on how early on in the night you're asking her. Obviously most bar girls won't charge you 2500 Baht for long time when it's 8pm, not unless she knows she's not getting customers. Most bar girls earn more money dealing with multiple customers who pay 1500 Baht for short time in one night.
Whether you take a bar girl for short time or long time it's best you stay in a hotel that has a bar girl friendly policy. These hotels won't charge you a joiners fee for taking a bar girl back to your room. You can find bar girl friendly hotels near all of the red light districts in Bangkok. Alternatively you can go to a short time hotel but you have to pay 300 Baht for an hour.
One final tip is to keep your 100 Baht bills and 500 Baht bills separate. Both bill's colors look similar, especially in the dark neon lighting of a go go bar.
