Canouan Island is the third largest island in the Grenadines, part of the Carribean Islands. The word Canouan gets its name from the native Arawak language meaning turtle. This is mainly due to the fact that there are so many turtles on the island. A visitor to the island can witness many fresh water turtles on the island. Salt water turtles can be found near the reefs of the island. Canouan Island when viewed from top resembles a figure of a boot. The island has dimensions of 3.5 miles by 1.25 miles. A barrier reef can be seen to run along the island’s Atlantic side, that is the eastern side, 10 years ago that side was dwelt primarily by yachtsman and explorers.
Canouan Island is mostly well known for its beautiful beaches. The Grand Bay also called as Charlestown Bay is located on the western coast of the island. This is the primary anchoring point and is a rather huge bay which consists of an entrance-exit channel point for yachts. Other bay areas along the Canouan Island coastline include the Rameau Bay, Corbay, Maho Bay and Friendship Bay.
Apart from the wonderful beaches that Canouan Island has to offer, the place is also a popular for golf, water sports and great hiking. The island has an 18 hole golf course in the Raffles resort complex. The island is also a favorite among yachtsmen who anchor their ships along the numerous bay areas of the island’s coast.
A stay at a Caribbean resort hotel is advised. A good option would be stay at a luxury hotel in Canouan Island.
