The tradition of high tea goes back many years to the late 1700s .In England at that time there were only two meals a day served at breakfast and dinner so it was a very long time in between meals. The Duchess of Bedford (1788 " 1861) invented afternoon tea to keep her going until dinner time. She would invite friends to join her for tea at 5pm and other hostesses quickly followed suite. Food at tea would include thin crustless sanwiches, toasted breads with jams and pastries, scones or cumpets.the emphasis was on presentation and conversation. The art of high tea is alive and well in Brisbane .There are lots of places where you can enjoy a lovely pot of loose leaf tea accompanied by light sandwiches and delicious tarts and pastries .Here are a few of the best :
Experience old-world tradition at Joseph Alexander's at Milton. This 120 year old historic house offers Brisbane river and skyline views along with an amazing assortment of tea, baked goods, finger sandwiches and much more.
High Societea is a favorite location in Clayfield. The attention to detail and amazing presentation make this a great location for a formal Tea party or shower. Since it's opening in May of '04 it has become the local favorite Tea House.
The Brasserie is located on the river at the Stamford Plaza. This locations offers specialties such as chocolate infused buffet, or if you prefer a traditional menu, their baked goods, pastries, tea and coffee will please any palate.
Queenies Traditional Tea house in Nundah is an intimate old style building and has a seating capacity of around 30m people. All the cakes are baked on the premises and include delicious and tempting cakes such as Chocolate Guinness Cake, Passionfruit Sponge (Queenies signature cake) and Cheery and Almond Cake. High Tea is served with a glass of Pimms, decadent deserts including chocolate crme brulee, Champagne and berry jelly and a traditional Tea cake.
