Notes from the Road - travelling the world
Monastir is a city located in North Eastern Tunisia, right in the middle of 1300 km of sweeping North African coastline. Around 40% of Tunisia is in fact made up from Saharan Desert, but this is a far cry from the old fishing port of Monastir.
With a population circa 40'000 it can be considered a small city indeed, which is a throwback to the fact that it was built on the ruins of a Roman city, named Ruspina. The main feature in the area is the well preserved Ribat, which is essentially a medium sized fort with a high cylindrical tower to allow the military forces of the time a clear view across the sea to watch for any hostile ships. Today, it simply offers uninterrupted views of Hassan Bourguiba's mausoleum, The Mussulman cemetery and of course the seafront. The Ribat also played host to the cast of Monty Python's Life of Brian, where some parts of this infamous and blasphemous movie were filmed.
Temperatures in Monastir hang around the 30c mark during the summer months and remain mild throughout the winter. As such the beaches also serve as a much loved attraction to visitors, which is in contrast to the 9th century fortifications described earlier. Everything you would expect from a now well developed tourist resort are present, such as the usual water sports facilities etc.
The best way to shop in Monastir is by visiting the Souk located in the old part of the city. They market stalls sell everything from jewellery to leather work, and are a bargain hunters paradise albeit with initial prices being heavily inflate, but huge discounts can be negotiated with a bit of haggling. Going in at 50% is a good start.
The city of Monastir has its own International Airport with daily flights arriving from most Western European countries. The airport itself is located outside of the city of Monastir along with most of the Hotels, although access is straightforward.
