When going abroad for the first time it is beneficial doing a little preperation before you set off. Find yourself a map of the area you are going to visit, many of which have area attractions, including historical sites, restaurants, and trendy shopping sites (unless of course your are on a Gorilla safari!).

Study the destination you are going to be going to and understand whether it is beneficial to have a car, scooter or mountain bike when you are their or whether you would prefer to walk and get the bus or train. Most buses or trains can be booked in advance getting you past the whole thing of queing or trying to negotiate the fare.

When travelling abroad make sure that you have the necessary jabs for that area and that you have as much health insurance as you can afford (being caught out when travelling can be a very expensive afare. If you are travelling in an district that is lightly populated ensure you have found out how to deal with any of the areas specific foibles.

If your main idea is having a break away from your everyday it might be worth looking into working abroad, this really allows you to dip into the culture and pick up the feel of a area and fine hone your area dialect. There are all kinds of options for this including volunteer work and learning vacations.

If you have specific needs for your travel be it due to disability or dietry needs make sure you have taken it into account ahead of going, speaking to your travel provider.
