Bullying and Private Tutoring

Statistics show that at least 20 per cent of students in Australian schools have experienced bullying and harassment. We'll show how this impacts private tutoring and how private tutoring can help.

Poor performance at school is often an indicator that something else is going on. Frequently parents are the last to know about their child being bullied with issues coming up at parents evenings or overhearing comments from other kids.

Bullies can make life miserable for a child, making it nearly impossible for them to concentrate in class and starting them off on a spiral of self-doubt, loss of self esteem and loss of self confidence which can feed-back into increased bullying as they become an easier and easier target. This can have detrimental effects on the child that extend well into adulthood so the sooner something is done to stop the bullying the better.

Private tutors can make a big difference to the lives of bullied children. They can help get the child's academic performance back on track and they can also be an excellent third party for the child to confide in. Children will often not talk to their parents about problems they are having in school due to shame or even threats from other children but they will talk to someone that is entirely removed from the situation especially if that person is easy to talk and relate to (which all Private Tutors should be). If you have concerns about your child being bullied at school then speak to their private tutor about it and find out if they are aware of what is going on. The tutor should be able to offer advice or refer you to experts that can deal with the situation on a professional level.

Remember that some children assign a stigma to private tutoring and associate it with "special needs". Your child may be very fearful of their peers finding out they are having private tutoring. It's always a good idea not to tell your social group that your child is having private tutoring unless your child is very happy and open with it herself.

Ho Math and Chess Worksheets Really Work

By: Frank Ho | 02/01/2010
Much attention on math reforms has always been on how math shall be taught? The most obvious change was in the area of “word problems” section in the textbooks, which is more exploratory and requires a real understanding of some math concepts.

When to teach child chess, how young can a child learn chess

By: Frank Ho | 01/01/2010
After researching the relationship between chess and math for over 15 years, I conjecture that chess is a geometry-based game, which particularly is related to the concept of symmetry. So the way to teach a very young child is perhaps to point out the meaning of symmetry in a practical way, not in a conceptual way. How young can a child learn chess? Often I was asked this question but only found out it is difficult to answer.

My Experience of Using Ho Math and Chess™ Teaching Set vs. 3-D Traditional Chess Set

By: Frank Ho | 28/12/2009
Toward the end of 2007, I released an innovative chess teaching set Ho Math and Chess Teaching Set using Geometry Chess Symbols to indicate each chess piece’s move buy marking GCS on the surface of each uniformed look of chess piece. My idea of creating this set is to use the symmetry lines of a square to show how each piece is supposed to move - an idea of “what you move is what you see”. After my use of this set and teaching children for several months, I have some surprising and interesti

The selection of your swim school should be based on a number of factors, but most importantly, on the quality of teaching. If you can, find out about the background of the swimming teachers; do they have appropriate qualifications? Do they have experience of teaching your age group? Ideally they should aim to be completely transparent about their teachers credentials and encourage parents to find out more about their teacher's experience before they book you into lessons.
