New York tutoring prices have sky-rocked in recent years and companies are charging any where between $80-$500 per hour! Craigslist, a cost-effective alternative for reserving professional services, seems to draw relatively less attention in this market than other service industries. “This isn’t my auto detailing company,” explains Jessica Kollander, an Upper East Side mother of four. “When it comes to my children’s education, I want to be confident I am providing them with quality education. I don’t trust a craigslist advertisement for a responsibility like that.” This craigslist skepticism has only been enhanced since the media branded the Craigslist Killer.
However, the internet has become a bottomless well of information for students. Study guides, vocab quizzes, full-length tests, and other SAT practice materials are available all over the internet.
The College Board offers a free, full-length real SAT exam at the collegeboard.com. Parliament Tutors updates the Unofficial SAT Question of the Day every midnight, and even gives students a free, full-length custom diagnostic exam complete with an online grading module at ParliamentPrep.com. Number2.com offers students a wealth of vocabulary quizzes.
Still, students often find comfort and gain confidence with the extra help of a private tutor. Jared Diamond, a private New York tutor with Parliament Tutors, believes that his lessons can give students that extra edge in standardized tests and in the classroom. “I have been tutoring for years and I can really breakdown where students demonstrate the greatest potential for improvement. It’s not just an information game. I see a situation and think, given this much time and this potential for improvement, where should we focus our attention.”
Other parents are simply fed up with the exorbitant prices of SAT Prep. ”I bought my son a practice book, I familiarized myself with the online resources available, and I have given him a strict study schedule. I am not paying a college student $150 per hour. That’s crazy!” exclaims Adam Tubero, a Long Island clothing retailer.
As the number of applications to top-tier universities increases, online learning resources are drawing increased attention; however, the demand for private tutoring and test preparation still continues to grow, as well. Last year over 1.5 million students took the SAT.
