Master Math Basics Before Grade 4

There are so many cases in my teaching life, which the students did not master their basics such as addition, subtraction, multiplication or division and then in their later life these unskilled basics have had dramatic impact on their math ability but unfortunately they were not aware of it.

Why they could not do word problems well or grade 8 equations or grade 10 relation equations well despite I have so patiently explained the concepts and steps again and again? It is so sad for me to tell them they really should go back to basics like relearn fractions they had learned in elementary. They are already grade 9 and some of them are in grade 10 already so it is understandable that it is difficult for them to take the suggestion to go back to elementary math and re-work on fractions or times table.

I am writing this article to tell parents and students that children must master math basics before grade 4 and if you don’t then it could be an uphill battle to try to constantly have to improve your math in later grades.

Without mastering basics math, the obstacles students could face later in their life are:

  1. They are slow in response to teaching and often can not catch up to the speed the math teacher is presenting the new materials, so after class they only understand 50% of what the teacher is talking about or most of the time they do not understand at all.

  1. They lose second nature or instinct to see the way to solve word problems. Even with the help of calculators, there are problems that calculators will not help or they will end up spend too much time on a few problems to try to use calculators to find the “way” and can not finish the problems in time. For example the following equation solving problem, 3 x = 24, it is really simple matter that both sides divided by 3 so one will get x = 8 but if the students have not mastered the basics then the student need to use a calculator to do it and simply can not do it mentally. They learn math without using their mental calculation ability but rely on external device so when asked to find out factors, these students will be very slow and will have difficulty in finding out LCD for relational equations.

For a bit complicated equation 3x – 2 = 5x + 3 then they just can’t “see” that – 5 = 2x without doing nay more work.  Sometimes, they make mistakes just because they need to write many extra steps to get their answers since they can’t do simple mental calculations.

  1. Since these students never mastered basics, their brains are not trained to do any basics math mentally so they have trouble to understand integers later. They can’t do calculations easily by just looking at the signs.

The above are just 3 points out of many potential problems for those students who have not mastered basics could face later in their higher grades.  My advice for those students who did not master the basics is to go back to elementary math and re-do those very basic calculations and lots of practice to the point that you can come up with answers orally with put using calculators.

He invented Frankho Symbolic Chess Language, intriguing Frankho Chess Maze, and also an unique new chess teaching set. He published math and chess teaching theoretic basis in a Canadian math journal. The USA Illinois research data has shown statistically significant that Ho Math and Chess teaching method increases children's math marks and also improves children's critical thinking skills. The Ho Math and Chess Teaching Set can improve children's memory by playing half-blind chess. More details, please visit www.mathandchess.com.

Why fraction is so difficult?

By: Frank Ho | 06/10/2009 | K-12 Education
Why fraction is so difficult? Because it is too powerful. Many have thought that fractions are difficult to learn for students because the concepts of fractions were not explained to students. Many research papers are written on how to “teach” fractions to students. Fraction is difficult for students because it “inherently” has some powerful properties, which no other numbers can even come close when comparing to fraction.

In our over fifteen years of teaching math experience, we have witnessed how important it is for students to have basic mental math ability. What is basic mental math ability? How to Buy Franchised Math Learning Center

The era of using the idea of “cut and paste” some math worksheets together to open a math learning center has long gone. Children today living in a world which has a landslide difference from their parents, urban children do not run around in the rice fields and they hardly play with their neighbourhood children any more. Many children grow up surrounded by computer games and cell phones and downloaded music and they watch video clips on their cell phones.

Math Worksheets Children Like

By: Frank Ho | 27/06/2009 | Tutoring
Many children like chess, why? Simply put, it is a game and it is fun and children can play it without using a computer. Can you image nowadays that parents are telling me that their children spend too much time on computers playing games? Parents do not want to see children continue to use computer at learning centers any more since their children become near-sighted by spending too much time on the computer. This article is not about if the use of computer could potentially harm children’s eye

The Future Trend of Math Learning Center

By: Frank Ho | 27/06/2009 | Tutoring
Will the way of math teaching change in the future? I think so, especially in the elementary schools. The idea of just giving traditional math worksheets to children for them to work on and expect them to do math well will become an increasingly unpopular method of teaching math. It is boring and it is not what children wanted and children had never given any choices as to what kinds of worksheets they wanted, they were simply told to work on them.

Sudoku Chess Puzzles Spark Children’s Math Interest

By: Frank Ho | 27/06/2009 | Tutoring
I have observed that one of the main reasons that children hate math is they have not mastered the foundation of math, surprisingly the root of problems can be traced to the basics they learned in the elementary grades such as addition, subtraction, multiplication or division. When elementary students are asked why do we have math? Lots of these children can relate math to our daily life such as shopping, cooking, measuring, driving, time, shapes etc.

Using Chess to Teach Math in Elementary Schools

By: Frank Ho | 27/06/2009 | Tutoring
Chess has been heralded as a miracle to help children develop their math skills. How true is it? After my over 10 years of research and teaching of math, I think the answer is not a simple yes or no, rather it depends on how chess instruction is delivered. If chess is delivered as a pure game and taught in a way that it has nothing to do with math then the impact on math learning is minimum. On the other hand, if chess is integrated into math worksheets then the effect is more significant. This
