The changing face of private music lessons due to the internet

You may be aware of the 2008 world economic crash which saw trillions of dollars wiped off the world stock markets. In fact the world would be in a depression now except for the fact that the IMF bailed out the banks. We are in the midst of a major change due to the rapid growth of the internet. Soon people will be divided into two groups. Those who embrace the internet (the rich) and those who don't (the poor).

The main reason for the 1930's depression was the industrial revolution. It was a major shift at the time. Ignoring the internet would be like ignoring the invention of the DVD player and continuing to use VHS and getting frustrated because you can't rent the latest movies. Only difference is it will be a million times worse because unless you live on an island you are going to be a part of the changing times whether you like it or not.

The internet allows us to communicate quickly and give our students enormous added value. Traditional teaching will never be the same. Kids today don't want to just learn where to put their fingers. They want to be inspired by informed teachers. They want to know about the guitar world both off and online. They want to know how to find the best online resources and they want us as experienced guitar players to help them decipher such materials.

As a guitar teacher you may have years of experience and lots to offer but these days that is entry level for a teacher. If you are not embracing the net you are simply not in the race. Kids today can have lessons on line with the best teachers from around the world. They can watch Youtube clips for free on any style, lick, trick you can imagine. Kids can quite feasibly walk into their lessons knowing more than their teachers (if the teachers aren't keeping up). The world is changing at a frantic pace and those teachers who think they can operate alone as they have traditionally done will gradually see their student numbers disappearing and themselves standing in a dole cue.

Conclusion: Spend at least an hour a day surfing the net. Joining a network like G4 GUITAR will give you a unique advantage because by working together and sharing knowledge and information.  Teacher networks are the future.

By: David Hart | 14/11/2009 | Childhood Education
As a music teacher of more than 20 years the strategy which has proven to be the overall winner is the the confidence builder. In this article I explain why and how it works and also why so many teachers overlook it. Confidence building is in my opinion is really what teaching is all about. A confident student will find their way regardless of initial setbacks whereas a student lacking confidence is likely to throw in the towel as the very first hurdle.
