Current Airport Luggage Restrictions

Packing is one of the trickiest aspects of reaching one’s destination by flight. Security measures make the whole process a stress filled adventure for those who are not adequately prepared. One way to ensure a stress-free trip is to know the rules before you start packing. Still, it can be a confusing process. Obtaining a complete list of restrictions prior to your trip will help to smooth the process out. These days, the most confusing aspect of luggage is the carry on. It has been recently discussed in the media whether one is able to bring liquids on an airplane, or not. The system really is quite simple. The same rule applies to liquids, gels and aerosols: they must all be in containers that hold three ounces or less. Three ounces is the rule of thumb, but there are a few nuances. The container must be three ounces or smaller. Three ounces of liquid, gel or aerosol in a larger container, most times, is unacceptable. Each item must have its own three ounce container. The container may be smaller than three ounces, but it cannot be larger. Once all of your eligible containers have been filled they may be placed in one, one quart size, zip-top, clear plastic bag. The zip-top is essential as it allows easier access for security officials, among other things. Sandwich bags that you fold will not be allowed. Each traveler is allowed only one bag, so plan accordingly. When you reach the security checkpoint, the clear plastic bag must be separated from the rest of your luggage to be examined by airport personnel.

There are exceptions to the rules. A variety of essential items are allowed to be carried in containers larger than three ounces. These items are baby formula, juice or breast milk for infants and toddlers. Other exceptions are prescription medicine or over the counter medications such as eye drops or saline solutions. If you have a disability or medical condition that requires you to have water, juice, gels or liquid nutrition you may carry those with you as well. Any life support or life sustaining liquids can be carried in larger containers as well. You can also bring items that are liquid or gel based that are meant to augment the body for medical or cosmetic reasons. A final exception is made for passengers that require gels or frozen liquids in order to cool medical or disability related items.

Reasonable amounts of these items over three ounces are allowed, but must meet the following conditions: They must be packed separate from your other liquid, gel and aerosol items. They cannot share the same bag. In many cases, you must also declare that you have these items with the security personnel at the checkpoint. Your final step will be to present these items for additional inspection at the x-ray machine. Any liquid purchased at a shop or restaurant beyond the security checkpoint may be carried onto your flight freely.

Carry on liquids are probably the most confusing and difficult items to pack. There are a few things to make this process easier. As with everything, it is always a good idea to plan ahead. Go to a grocery or drug store and purchase a few three ounce clear plastic containers. If you arrive with the wrong size bottle, the airport will provide one for at a fixed price. This is the main reason why purchasing a 3 ounce bottle prior to arriving at the airport is beneficial to both being on-time for your flight, and saving money.

There are also restrictions for the rest of your luggage; you can obtain this information from your airline. Be sure to look up information such as the maximum weight of checked baggage. For many airlines you may check as many bags as you would like, but if you go over the weight limit you will be fined heavily. Even with airlines that limit you to two bags, there is generally plenty of space to balance out the bags and come under weight. Yes, it may be easier to keep track of just one bag, but spreading your items into two can save you money. Packing for air travel can be a simple task when you are informed and use the resources that are available.

Next time you are flying, make sure you know what you are able to bring to your flight. The current rules are: a 3 ounce bottle for liquids and gels and a luggage weight limit specified by your airline. Airlines also charge a fee if your luggage exceeds their allowed weight limit. Due to these rules changing often, check with your airport prior to your flight to ensure a stress-free trip.
