The International Festival of Jazz in Prague takes place every autumn in the Czech capital. And it is much more than a simple festival considering its location. This festival portrays jazz in the life of the Czech people with added extras such as food and beer. Furthermore, this festival is a reminder of the long communist period when the country was oppressed; jazz was a way for the people to express their freedom through music in a society which repressed every kind of freedom. Jazz and rock were considered as aggressive music and something that lead to the rebellion. This is why this Jazz festival has taken such importance and acts as a real symbol of freedom. This festival was one of the only ways "to escape" and to keep in contact with the outside world.
The first International Jazz Festival in Prague took place in 1964. 2008 will celebrate 45 years since the beginning of this festival, but celebrates only the 30th edition as it was scheduled only every 2 years in earlier days.These 30 editions have seen some major star appearances and have therefore helped the festival gain international recognition. For example, Mr. Acker Bilk and his Paramount Jazz Band performed during the very first edition and also in 1982 and Stan Getz Quintet participated in the festival in 1978. There has also bin many other artists such as B.B. King, Herbie Hancock or still David Brubeck.
International Jazz Festival 2007
Nowadays, IJF is a mix of classic and modern jazz. In 2006, the winners of the American Grammy Awards, ‘Sugar Blue’ and ‘Rhoda Scott’ participated as guest appearances in the festival. The festival of 2007 was organised with the participation of Rotterdam Ska Jazz Foundation, Pee Wee Ellis, N.O.H.A. and Dee Dee Bridgewater.
