If you have a vacation planned in the near future, you are probably excited about the trip. Seeing the world can really be a life-changing experience; vacations and business trips often mean extremely long flights, some that are well over 15 hours long. If you are looking for ways to pass time on an upcoming flight, take advantage of the following tips.
Tip #1: Check about electronics restrictions before you leave.
Most airlines restrict the use of certain electronics during take off and landing, but at most points in a flight, you should be able to use laptop computers, MP3 players, handheld gaming devices, portable DVD players, and other electronics that can help you pass the time. Before you leave, consider going out and buying some new movies, music, games, etc. specifically for the flight so that you have something to look forward to doing. If you are on a budget, you can also consider asking some friends if you can borrow some entertainment for the. Many flights offer movies if you are willing to pay for a headset, but there are no guarantees as to what they will be showing.
Tip #2: Strike up a conversation with the people around you.
If your fellow passengers look tired or busy, keep to yourself, but on most long flights, you will find that other fliers are just as bored as you are. Do not be afraid to say hello! Something as simple as a compliment or remark about the weather can lead easily to introductions, as well as a conversation about your travel plans. Be careful not to give away too much personal information about yourself, but at the same time, keep an open mind – you might even meet your soul mate, a life-long friend, or someone who knows a lot about the areas you’re visiting and can give you some beneficial information.
Tip #3: Bring reading material about your destination.
The more you know about your ultimate destination, the more fun you can potentially have while there. You do not want to spend hours, jetlagged, in a hotel room trying to find a good take-out restaurant. Instead, on the flight there, read up on local culture, tourist hot spots, and more. In fact, this information can be beneficial because you will be informed about the best restaurants and locations worth visiting. Talk with your travel companions about your plans for each day while you are away. You can even consider bringing some audio lessons on the local language if you are flying to a foreign nation.
Tip #4: Look for a travel form of a favorite hobby.
Although you cannot fish or play guitar while on an airplane, you can look for versions of your favorite hobby that are travel-friendly. For example, if you love to cook, maybe you can bring along some cookbooks and highlight some recipes you would like to try. If you enjoy drawing, you can bring along a sketchpad because you may get some inspiration from your trip. If all else fails, find some books that interest you and these can help make the trip seem a lot faster and enjoyable.
Tip #5: Bring your own pillow.
Sometimes the best thing to do on a long flight is to sleep. Most airlines give passengers free pillows, although some are now starting to charge. In any case, consider bringing your own. It might be uncomfortable to sleep on a plane because you would rather be in your own bed, but your own pillow can at least help you feel a little more at home in this strange sleeping environment. If possible, bring a small pillow that can fit inside your carry-on so that it can be easily transported, and bring multiple pillowcases so you can change if you first one gets dirty.
Long flights are the start of many great adventures. Although they can be uncomfortable and painfully boring, you can use the above-mentioned tips to make your ride a bit more pleasant. If you foresee yourself having a problem enduring the flight, invest in a first-class seat, which will be more comfortable and give you more privacy.
There are many activities available to bring on board your next flight, but you need to find the best option for you. Activities such as reading your favorite book, reading about your destination or listening to music are all common methods of passing time on a plane. Drawing is another option if you are interested in art. These examples are all great ways to pass the time on a long flight and they are worth bringing. At the very least, get to the airport early so you can choose your seat on the flight, depending on whether you prefer an isle or window seat.
