Panoramic photography is a technique of photography, that involves the use of specialized equipment or software that captures images with elongated fields of view. It is also known as wide format photography. This term is also used for a photograph that is cropped to a relatively wide aspect ratio. While there is no formal division between "wide-angle" and "panoramic" photography, "wide angle" normally refers to a type of lens, but this lens type does not necessarily image a panorama. With the use of new technology it is possible to capture 360 degree panoramic video.
Panoramic video capturing has become an essential requirement for infantry and Special Forces. Much of the specialized equipment such as the night vision equipment and sophisticated panoramic cameras are used in the door-to-door search and destroy enemy’s mission and to round them up. Navy Seals, Swat Teams, Special Forces have been using such modern equipment for a long time. They work so well in fact that they are quite addicting. War fighters have been known to keep them on even while in closer quarters where lighting is sufficient without them.
There are different types of panoramic cameras available, such as short rotation or swing lens camera, full rotation camera or fixed lens camera. Short rotation cameras have a lens that rotates around the camera's rear nodal point opposite a curved film plane. As the photograph is taken, the lens pivots around its nodal point while a slit exposes the vertical strip of film that is aligned with the axis of the lens.
Rotating panoramic cameras are similar to swing-lens or short rotation cameras, but are capable of 360° of rotation or more. Fixed lens cameras, are panoramic cameras that have fixed, stationary lenses and a flat image plane. These are the most common form of panoramic camera and range from inexpensive APS cameras to sophisticated 6x17 cm and 6x24 cm medium format cameras. Panoramic cameras using sheet film are available in formats up to 10x24 inches.
