The Difference Between Intralase and Microkeratome

For individuals considering surgery to correct vision problems, a number of safe and effective methods are available. Two of those methods are IntraLase and Microkeratome. While the two procedures share similarities, there are also major differences, particularly in how the surface of the cornea is prepared prior to making the corneal flap for LASIK .

IntraLase

IntraLase is a ‘blade free’ technique used to create the corneal flap to prepare the eye for LASIK. LASIK uses an excimer laser to reshape the cornea for improved visual acuity.

Rather than using a mechanical blade, IntraLase uses rapid pulses of laser light to create the flap. As the IntraLase laser moves back and forth across the surface of your eye, a uniform layer of bubbles are created below the corneal surface. The tissue is then separated where the bubbles have formed, and your eye doctor creates the flap. The flap is then folded back to begin the LASIK treatment.

Microkeratome

Microkeratome is a hand-held instrument with a steel blade that makes a tiny cut across the cornea to create the corneal flap. The cut can leave an irregular eye surface after the corneal flap is lifted, which may affect the quality of your vision postoperatively.

Generally speaking, most eye doctors prefer IntraLase because:

IntraLase offers the opportunity for better vision: IntraLase gives patients a better chance to achieve 20/20 vision, and patients report an increased ability to see at night, especially in dim light.

IntraLase offers greater control for your eye doctor: IntraLase allows your eye doctor to precisely adapt the dimensions of your corneal flap, including the diameter and angle of its edges. An individualized corneal flap means better results for your vision. Additionally, corneal flaps created with IntraLase “lock” into position once LASIK has been performed.

IntraLase is safe, non-painful, and quick—about 15-30 seconds for one eye. Overall, the entire procedure normally takes no more than ten minutes.
