Can you Port a VoIP (voice Over Internet Protocol) Phone Number?

The rules and regulations of porting apply only to CLECS, RBOCs, and ILECs. This means that large telephone companies and cellular phone providers are subject to porting rules. However, VoIP providers, are not considered to be telephone companies, and they are therefore not subject to porting laws and regulations. After all, they don’t own any of their own telephone lines. These lines are leased from actual telephone companies. Therefore, any complaints to the FCC about the lack of a VoIP company’s porting issues will likely fall on deaf ears.

The telephone numbers assigned by VoIP companies are typically owned by a CLEC and then leased to the VoIP company which then issues it to the individual users. Therefore, technically speaking, the VoIP company is the telephone number’s true customer – not you. This means that under portability laws, you do not have the right to port your assigned VoIP telephone number. It is the CLEC who owns the number, not the VoIP company, and so they cannot provide you with the ability or the right to port your number.

This means that if you have a VoIP telephone number, you should never expect to be able to port it anywhere, even if you are attempting to port within standard portability regulations.

Furthermore, even with successful porting, a cellular phone requires substantial processor in order to be able to port a VoIP into a cellular phone. Mobile phones simply cannot handle such a substantially sized application for transforming your voice into the necessary VoIP data and then send that data along the appropriate data channel. Some people have been able to find compatible applications that their mobile phone processors can handle. Unfortunately, this causes substantial drain on the battery. Therefore, even when porting can be worked out, cellular phones – even smart phones – are not yet the size of computers and just can’t handle it in any realistic way.

The challenge, then, is not to port VoIP, but to find better ways of applying VoIP benefits without having to rely on porting to your mobile phone.
