2zen and the Art of Joomla Web Development - a New Way

Ok, I'm new at this. Had a website designed by someone else because I never did one before and did not have time to make one myself, but cannot afford to pay for updates. I want to update pictures on the website, downloaded classic ftp, uploaded some pictures on the website, but they do not show up on the website when I look at my website, except for one. Why that one, I do not know. Also, I tried to delete pictures on website. The file doesn't appear on the ftp link, but the pictures still appear on the website.
