Knowing some colour psychology & symbolism is key to knowing which colours affect people in certain ways. colour perception is strongly linked to emotions & feelings including happiness, sadness & lust.

Black is associated with power, sophistication, finances and mystery. in designing for the web, it can be used effectively with bolder colours to create good contrast.

White is linked with cleanliness, simpleness, calm and purity. used on websites a lot, it can convey style and indicates that the content of the site is strong enough to stand alone without the any strong visual aid.

With connotations to passion, annoyance, fire and power, red, used delicately, can be a fantastic way to direct the user's attention to a certain area.

Yellow can be a wonderful colour to bring attention to specific parts of a web page. It can be linked with joy, happiness and summer.

Black is a really popular background colour as it shows off other colours very well. it is associated with feeling of sexiness, style, elegance and power.

The colour white is really popular in design websites love interior design and graphic design. it creates a feeling of balance and space. it is associated with peace, simplicity, purity and light.

Purple is associated with royalty, indulgence & luxury. it isn't a commonly used colour in designing web sites, perhaps because it's known as a girly colour.

Creating the impression of earthiness, makeup & poverty, brown is extremely similar to green because it can be used to give the website a relaxed feel.

Orange is associated with fire, enthusiasm, heat & hazard. But its also a truly friendly & youthful colour that's often used in sites targeted at youth culture.

Tradition, stability, depth & nature are all associated with the colour brown. But its truly similar to green in the fact that its also associated with trees, nature & calm.

The role of colour isn't just to make a site look good, it can evoke feelings & emotions from the browsing. selecting colours that anger the site user can have detrimental effects on your website, whilst selecting cleverly can mean that the website lives up to user expectation.
