As someone who likes full control over his server, I don't recommend either, but understand the necessity of both. For the luxury of having these tools available, you should expect to fork over another 10 to 15 dollars a month.

You feel more comfortable with a windows server because of their unwillingness to support their customers? You should be prepared to dish out a few more dollars a month for the more insecure operating system. Cheer up, you're helping sponsor them fantastic commercials during the superbowl.

All hosts are not made the same, I would like to suggest that Godaddy is a microcosm of a significant portion of them.

If you were to purchase a dedicated server for 12 months with the windows operating system plus cpanel, I can't currently find that option, to include cpanel in the Godaddy cart, it does exist. You're looking at more than $1,220.07 a year without any technical assistance at all. I can guarantee, you'd run Magento without too many hitches, after the initial installation, because its an excellent piece of software.
