Have you ever heard the old saying, "You get what you pay for?" Web hosting is not like most things; in fact you are only ripping yourself off when you pay huge monthly fees for web hosting.
There are thousands of web hosting companies online, choosing on to fit your needs can be challenging but follow these 10 tips and the process will be smooth sailing.
10. DO NOT assume big name companies (such as GoDaddy) provide you with better hosting services. I have learned that these big name companies use their name to be a bully and charge their customers for every individual item purchased.
9. Read the fine print… Many of these hosting companies try to lock you in on a long term contract… This is ok until the very next day when you find another company that offers the same services for 3 to 4 times less money.
8. Is unlimited bandwidth and disk space necessary? Ultimately that is for you to decide but I say no! Some amazing hosting companies such as Host Gator place limits on bandwidth and disk space; however, you will never even get close to reaching even 5% of the space provided.
7. Read articles… For this step you are on the right track.. (You are reading this aren’t you.)
6. Do you need lynx or windows based web servers? Lynx servers offer you support in the areas for Perl, CGI, PHP, etc… Windows servers typically offer MsSQL… Know your needs and choose you hosting accordingly. (For most beginner webmaster this does not apply).
5. Look for extra bonuses. Some hosting services offer free bonuses to new members such as FREE Pay Per Click Ad Credit… These are always nice bonuses.
4. Will you be hosting multiple sites? If the answer is yes, choosing a site such as Host Gator that allows unlimited domain hosting is essential and a big money saver in the long run!
3. Guarantees are a big plus… It is my belief that a company’s guarantee policy portrays how good of a product they really have… No guarantee = no confidence in their product, guarantee = great product.
