Questions to Ask a Potential Web Host

So, you have decided that you need a website. Whether your site will represent a business, or you are simply looking for a personal website, you will want to make sure to find the best host for your needs. There are plenty of web hosts vying for your attention, so how do you know which one is right for you?

Here is a list of questions that you should ask any web host before deciding on one. Consider these questions and explanations of why they are important.

What type of technical support do you offer? Some web hosts offer free support, others require that you pay a premium. In either case, you will want to look for a host that provides support 24 hours a day. Otherwise, you could be stuck with a big problem after hours, when you are most likely to get the most views.

Make sure to find out how much the support costs. A web host that charges extra for technical support may be worth it if the support is of high quality and is available whenever you need them.

How will my domain name be acquired? Some web hosts will get and register your domain name for you. Others will require that you attain your own name. Preferably, look for a host that will get your domain to save yourself some headache.

Most hosts that register your domain name will charge something extra for the service. Make sure to find out what the fee will be and find out if they will take care of renewal each year.

What type of web design options do you offer? Web hosts generally offer web builders where you can create a basic website. These web sites are generally based on a template and are not very alterable.

If you will be building your site with an external program, you will need to make sure that the web host supports uploads from that particular program. This is important to find out since not all hosts can support all programs.

What will be my cost? There will most likely be further fees that are not listed in the host’s original package charges. Make sure to find out about any hidden charges before signing up.

The key to finding the right web host is to ask questions. Anything that you would like to know, ask. Definitely ask the key questions above to make sure you are working with a quality web host.
