Why Choose Shared Web Hosting Over Private?

When I started my first website, I didn't know anything about hosting.  I picked a cheap web host and was on my way!  I wondered what the difference was between the cheap hosting packages and the more expensive ones.  The features seemed similar, so what was I missing out on?  Not much...

Shared hosting just means that you don't have your own server.  As a hardware engineer, I know first hand that a server is a very powerful piece of equipment, and most websites do not need their own.  They can be split up into several chunks, and you can't tell that the resources are not independent.  Memory, Processor speeds and network connections will still more than meet most people's needs.

"I plan to have a GIANT website with millions of daily visitors" you say?  Well, then forget about saving money, you need a private server.  But I would suggest that if you are just started out in the world of website design that you start small.  Right now, I am running 10 different websites on ONE shared hosting account.  I paid around one hundred dollars for the year, and my sites are chugging along with no issues.  I have never encountered downtime and the speeds are right up there with major website.

With a shared hosting plan you can typically host more than one domain at a time.  So for a small price, you can host several websites.  When checking out hosting companies, be sure to check for this feature.  If you can only host a single domain name, that is not a very good deal.  Keep looking.  Sales are popping up all the time.  Just be sure that the hosting company has been around for a while and that they have a good customer service department.  I use Hostmonster.com after leaving Ipowerweb (due to bad customer service).  I highly recommend Hostmonster.
