People sigh wistfully at the romance of a beach wedding, but oddly, such a simple, natural setting can create the most challenges. Marrying and partying on the beach can be wonderfully memorable if you take these challenges into consideration:
.) If the beach is not a familiar one, by all means employ a local consultant and/or caterer to whom it is.
.) Check local regulations for bonfires, grilling, liquor, noise, use of glass, etc. on the sand.
.) Be sure there are bathroom facilities nearby.
.) Consider accessibility for elderly or disabled guests. Plan entrances, walkways and seating for them. Assign someone to help if necessary.
.) If beach driving is not permitted, all your food and decorations will need to be carried in. And carried out!
.) If your party may continue after dark, plan ahead for outdoor lighting.
.) Pay attention to the tides!
.) Consider the use of cordless microphones, especially for the ceremony itself. You don’t want to compete with the sound of waves.
.) Generally, running water will be limited or nonexistent. Plan ahead.
.) For seating, benches or wide based chairs are best. Standard party chairs can sink into the sand.
.) Plan for a wind-resistant décor! Candles should be enclosed. Float flowers in bowls. Anchor napkins and tablecloths. Heavy-based glassware is a good idea.
.) Keep a rake on hand in case of seaweed or to rake an attractive walkway or aisle (you can dress it up with shells lining the sides).
.) Include recommended attire on your invitations.
.) Perhaps place a couple of large baskets near the beach entry for guests to deposit their shoes.
.) Be sure to have sunblock, insect repellant and burn/bite lotion available.
.) Definitely take a walk-through with your vendors to forestall any unseen complications.
.) Plan a simple hairstyle that won’t ruin your appearance if the wind is especially strong that day.
.) You’ll find movement easiest if you have your dress hemmed slightly shorter than full length. You will also probably want to forego a train and elaborate veil. Plan for flats or even bare feet.
.) Buffet style foods will work best for a beach party.
.) Remind your photographer that you don’t want any squinting photos!
.) Most of all – have a Plan B (covered area) in case the weather takes a nasty turn!
When properly planned, your guests will never even consider all the thought and organization that were needed to create such a beautifully simple and fun event. The key to making the affair carefree is to plan ahead! You’re going to have a wonderful day.
