Including Local Customs In Your California Wedding

Beautiful weather and astounding scenery make for a perfect wedding location, but a California wedding can also include some wonderful local customs. When deciding on where to have a wedding, the Golden State is usually on the short list as far as choices, so if you’re deciding on California for your wedding location here are a few local traditions that may make your event even more memorable.

One tradition that has been adopted from the Hispanic community in California occurs during the wedding reception. The guests at the reception all stand in the shape of a heart surrounding the bride and groom as they start their first dance together as husband and wife.

Another custom is the watching the sunrise and sunset on the first full day that the new couple is married. The newlyweds make sure to be awake for sunrise and watch it together and make certain to set time aside at sunset to watch the sun go down as husband and wife. With the beautiful sunrise and sunset in California, it’s easy to see how this custom got started.

For couples coming from out of state to have their California wedding, dipping their toes in the Pacific Ocean is a tradition that even non-newlyweds participate in. However, it should be mentioned that many a new bride has been swept off her feet at the surf’s edge and while the sand is usually warm on the beaches in California, the water is usually cold. If your groom is planning on lifting you in his arms in the waves, make sure he has excellent balance or you may dip more in the Pacific than just your toes.

A Native American custom that may fit into your California wedding is the inclusion of colors worn somewhere on the bride to represent the four directions of North, South, East and West. North is black, South is blue, East is white and West is yellow or orange. These colors honor the four directions of the Earth and have been a part of Native American ceremonies for centuries.

Your wedding day is always a memorable event. If you find you’d like to include a bit of local tradition in your wedding to add even more meaning or romance to your special day, California has a number of traditions that will fit easily into your plans.
