Top 10 Secret Best Man Speech Writing Tips by Ben Maffin

Ben Maffin from maffin.co.uk reviews his top 10 tips for writing a Best Man’s Speech.

There’s a lot more detail you need to consider (which have been covered in other articles), but these top 10 tips for writing a Best Man’s Speech will stand you in good stead and make an easy list to print out when you’re sitting trying to write the speech.

Top Ten Best Man Speech Tips

1. Start writing your best man’s speech at least two months before the big day. Leaving it until the last minute will wreck your nerves.

2. Practice. Practice. Practice. No really. This is important it’ll help with your delivery on the day.

3. Always responds on behalf of the bridesmaids and mention how lovely they look. It’s what their mums and dads will be expecting. They might even buy you a drink later if you suitably creep.

4. Avoid alcohol before giving the speech. Dutch courage is a double edged sword.

5. Do not give anything away to the bride, groom or anyone else (unless you have a confidant you are practicing infront) before making the speech. It will spoil the surprise and they may steal your ideas.

6. Do not offend the Bride in any way. It’s her day and she’ll not forgive you if you make her cry.

7. Try linking in jokes stories with your speech but make them as seemless as possible. The more people believe the story is true, the bigger the laughs you will get when you deliever the punch line.

8. Remember that making a mistake is no big deal. Avoid going back to correct it, this is what people usually notice.

9. Avoid using cliché quotes from books. This is what the groom will have done (which is why their speeches are usually unremarkable). Instead use actual situations and make a story out of it. If in doubt, make one up no-one will challenge you while you’re up there.

10. Always end on a positive note and with a toast to the bride and groom.

Conclusion

While the above is not a definitive guide, ticking them off should get you a least a pass mark after the event. The more you think about what you are doing the better the speech will be. There’s nothing wrong with re-drafting your speech on the morning before because you’ve had a good idea.
