Obesity is a growing concern in the world today, and teenagers are not immune to the problem. A lot of teens are simply a little bit overweight, but many are in danger of becoming morbidly obese. Unfortunately, weight loss takes time. The weight cannot simply be lost overnight.
Diet programs, pills, and fat camps are just a few of the ways for teens to lose weight, but these do not always work. Generally, the most effective way to lose weight is to exercise and eat healthy foods. This article will focus on the exercise portion of that equation.
Exercise assists in weight loss because it boosts stamina and speeds up metabolism. As a result of this process, the body is able to burn more calories and get rid of the excess fat. Many studies have proven that as long as the person is generally healthy, regular exercise will cause no health problems or issues. The worst case scenario is that the person pulls a muscle or has another minor injury. These things are easy to recover from given ample time and can be prevented by remembering to stretch.
Losing weight does not have to cost a lot of money. There are many exercises that teens can do at home. The teen could jog or walk, do sit ups and push ups, or run up and down the stairs. These are not always fun or glamorous methods of exercise, but they are very inexpensive, or even free, and they will help burn calories. Joining a gym is always an option for a teen that has some extra money. Most gyms should have personal trainers who can help the teen lose weight during personal, one on one sessions. These trainers will work with the teen to design an exercise program for them that is tailored to their specific issues and needs.
Of course, most teens will not have enough money to hire a personal trainer. If this is the case, they can work out on their own once they learn how to use all the gym equipment. They could also start taking an aerobics, tai chi or yoga class. Some teens tend to be a little bit self conscious or do not want to work out around other people, but still want to do yoga, aerobics or tai chi type classes. A good option for these teens is to buy an exercise DVD.
One thing that should not be forgotten, is to drink a lot of water while exercising. Two liters a day is generally a good amount. If the teen does not get enough water, they could get dehydrated or have a heatstroke. These are both very dangerous. It is a good idea to visit a doctor before starting a new exercise program. Many teens feel invincible, but may not be ready to undertake very rigorous exercise. It is advisable to start any exercise program slowly and cautiously at first. The teen can always increase intensity later.
Teens in school or college will most likely be able to use their schools exercise equipment or sports facilities. This is a good idea if the teen wants to save money on gym or exercise class costs. Of course, another important thing to think about is having a healthy diet. However, a healthy diet is basically useless without regular exercise.
A good formula for weight loss for teenagers is healthy eating + good exercise = weight loss.
