I know that the title of this article may sound surprising but it is indeed true. I am by no means putting down gym memberships. In fact, joining a gym is what turned my life around for the better. I used to be an expert couch potato. I was really good at sitting on the couch, watching television, and snacking on junk. It was one of my favorite past times and that along with sitting all day for my job, added on an excess of 35 pounds.
Joining a gym helped to change my attitude about becoming physically active. I no longer wanted to feel exhausted on a daily basis and by going to the gym, I began to feel more energetic. I stopped gaining weight. Let me repeat - I stopped gaining weight. However, I wasn't losing any either. I was doing just enough to prevent me from gaining anymore weight.
The problem was I had no structure. I still ate whatever I wanted and burned enough calories to prevent me from putting on any extra pounds. The lack of accountability kept me in that state for years. There was no one to answer to. No support system. No structure. I simply wasn't doing enough to lose the unhealthy extra weight.
Then finally, by a stroke of luck, I interviewed a doctor of physical therapy for my fitness blog. I run a fitness blog to help keep me motivated. The good doctor runs a homebased business that I immediately took an interest in because it revolved around fitness. I looked into it, became hooked, and now I am working out 6 days a week from home and losing weight the healthy way.
It is fun, convenient, and I have the support, structure, and accountability I was in so desperate need of and didn't realize it until I had it. Losing weight is no easy task and when you do it alone, it is even more difficult. I highly recommend finding a fitness program (whether at a gym or at home) that provides structure so that you can start seeing results.
