Losing weight can be a real struggle. It can mean being hungry all day, giving up your favorite foods, sweating more than you like, and feeling constantly unsatisfied. But weight loss doesn’t have to be an unpleasant experience if you approach it with the right mindset. There are lots of tricks and tips that can make shedding those extra pounds a delightful experience.

I know dieting can be an intimidating process. No one wants to stop eating doughnuts, cake, ice cream, and other delicious, but fattening, foods. There’s a reason they are hard to give up—they taste good! But healthy foods can be delicious as well and they can be just as satisfying as bad foods. The trick is to find which combination of foods work best for you. For me, meals with lean protein and lots of fresh vegetables keep me full and they taste delicious! Foods that are good for you don’t have to taste bland or boring. Generous sprinklings of herbs and spices, citrus based marinades, and dry rubs are wonderful replacements for heavy sauces and breading.

Exercise can be just as intimidating. Most people who are trying to slim down aren’t in the best shape, so workouts can be daunting. The best way to shape up is to start slow and gradually up the intensity. You can begin with simple exercises like walking, easy stretching, and training with light weights. And then, after a while, you can move up to speed walking, then jogging, and then running. The more you workout, the easier it becomes to keep up the routine and the less daunting those workouts become.

Achieving your perfect weight isn’t going to happen overnight, and keeping the weight off does require work. But it doesn’t have to be a chore. Developing a healthy lifestyle can be a fun new challenge that will be infinitely rewarding—all you have to do is get started and stick with it!
