Overview
Dieters seem to have two dismal options: deprive themselves of calories, carbs, or certain foods, or depend on a meal plan for proper portion control and nutritional options.
Nutrisystem® relies on the latter approach by helping dieters formulate a plan best suited to their individual needs. The company then delivers prepackaged meals to the front door. Supposedly, this method helps dieters both to lose weight and to learn how to shop for nutritious foods. Furthermore, dieters are supposed to learn portion control.
But Nutrisystem® may end up fostering dependence on its foods, and it’s hard to see how dieters will learn how to keep the weight off in the long run. Still, many who have undertaken the program have had some success.
Program at a Glance
The Nutrisystem® is a simple three-step program that leads from initial planning to healthy living. Whether or not it can accomplish this transition is another thing altogether.
Program in Focus
Nutrisystem® dieters begin by choosing a plan that incorporates a 28-day menu. Dieters choose breakfasts, lunches, dinners, and desserts for each day. If this sounds like too much, there is the option of a Favorite Foods Package – sort of a readymade solution for the indecisive. Dieters can order one month’s worth or sign up for monthly delivery.
The food is then delivered to the dieter’s front door at a potential cost of $11 per day. This may be a little much for some dieters.
The third phase involves grocery store lists and meal plans for a balanced diet. Dieters are also offered tracking tools in order to monitor weight loss progress.
Positives
• Variety of foods.
• Convenience.
Negatives
• Potentially expensive.
• Pre-packaged foods can be bland and/or poor-tasting.
Final Thoughts
This program sounds mildly interesting, but consumers may want to beware that pre-packaged foods can lose their allure rather quickly. And depending on how effectively Nutrisystem® is able to educate dieters, it may be difficult to transition to cooking your own nutritious, balanced meals. And if this is the case, some may grow to depend on Nutrisystem® for their weight loss success. Such dependence, when combined with increasingly unappealing foods, may lead to a disastrous yo-yo cycle, which no dieter needs to go through. A good basic and healthy diet may be more appealing, combined with exercise and a weight loss supplement to burn fat and control the appetite.
