When the majority of people go on a diet, they automatically think (or someone tells them) that they should never eat after 6 or 7pm.
They believe that since they will be going to bed soon after that, that anything they eat will automatically turn to fat.
This is not true however.
Total Calories Is What Matters
The first thing you have to realize, and is extremely important, is that the total calories you consume is what matters when it comes to fat loss.
It doesn’t matter what time of the day you eat, if you don’t consume more calories than your body burns, you will still drop weight.
But also keep in mind that no matter what time of the day you eat, if you do consume more calories than you burn, then just the opposite is going to happen and you’re going to gain weight.
Being Full Beyond the Point of Satisfaction
Now secondly, you need to consider your feelings of being full beyond the point of being satisfied. The problem with eating too much at night is that it likely means you aren't consuming enough calories during the day.
The problem with not eating enough throughout the day is that you could start noticing a lack of energy and also a tendency to start binge eating at night. Usually when the binge eating starts the healthy, nutritious foods aren’t the one’s you’re choosing to eat.
The Importance of Sleep
Getting enough sleep is crucial if you're trying to lose weight, not just because of how it affects you physically, but mentally as well. Lack of sleep makes you cranky, confused and can even make you feel depressed or angry. (and what do most people do when depressed or angry…that’s right…EAT)
You also move around less when you don't get enough sleep, which means you burn less calories. Lack of sleep may affect the secretion of cortisol, one of the hormones that regulates your appetite.
Simply put, what this all means is that it is possible to eat at night before bed and still lose body fat as long as your calories and other necessary factors for weight loss are correct.
So, the next time you're wondering if it’s OK to eat before bed, keep these points in mind.
