Some tips for choosing loss weight camps

Weight loss camps are growing in popularity more and more as the obesity epidemic grows each year.  People often think of a place to send overweight children when the idea of a loss weight camp comes to mind, but these loss weight camps actually exist for adults as well.  If you are desperate to lose weight, one of these camps might be your answer, but loss weight camps aren’t right for everybody.

A loss weight camp is a big commitment.  Chances are you will be spending thousands of dollars as well as giving up quite a few weeks of your life, to have someone tell you what you can and can’t eat, as well as being forced to exercise.  A loss weight camp should be a last resort for people that have tried other weight loss options that just didn’t stick.

The biggest danger involved with an adult loss weight camp, is that sometimes the weight loss doesn’t stick.  The reason the weight loss doesn’t stick is that although loss weight camps promote healthy eating and lots of exercise while you’re at the camp, they often don’t teach you how to apply these strategies  to everyday life, so once you leave the loss weight camp the stress of real life can drive  you back into old habits almost immediately.  

If you are thinking about trying a loss weight camp, you need to do some research.  You need to look for a loss weight camp that focuses on a holistic, lifestyle-altering program, which should include more than how to maintain exercise and diet.  You should be looking for a loss weight camp that is going to teach you how to avoid stress eating and help you cope with the emotional aspect of obesity.

The importance of a positive self image can not be overstated.  If you don’t leave a loss weight camp with a positive self image, then you’ve gained next to nothing.  You can be self assured that the weight will be right back to haunt you.  It’s even possible that that something worse could even happen.  It’s possible that you could develop an eating disorder trying to keep the weight off.  The counselors at the loss weight camp should spend just as much time training you to overcome your own self esteem problems as they should teaching you how to control your eating.

The thing about any weight loss program is that it needs to take the long term outlook into account.  If a loss weight camp is only focused on the short term loss of weight, the benefits will be minimal at best.  So if you’re looking at loss weight camps as an option, you need to take these things into account.  Check if the camp has any type of after care program, and if there are any experienced nutritionists and psychologists on staff to help you learn the skills needed to keep the weight off.  If they don’t have these, you might as well sign up for loss weight camp every year for the rest of your life.
