Here's a news flash you may have been waiting to hear for years: you don't have to starve yourself or spend every second of your spare time in the gym to lose weight and get healthy. The following common sense tips on how to lose weight will help you shed the pounds without going insane.
You only need to do one basic thing in order to see your weight start to drop: create a calorie deficit. This means you need to essentially eat fewer calories than your body can burn off, not in a single day but over a period of a week and month and beyond. So, this means what you eat or how much exercise you do in one single day doesn't matter very much. What matters is the calories consumed and burnt off over longer periods of time.
Most people focus too much on a single meal or a slip up. They feel they have blown it when they have something that is off their eating plan or that is packed with useless calories, and they throw in the towel. This is complete nonsense once you realize that the one snack or occasional meal off plan is not going to affect the scale in the long term. It is okay to have those isolated moments of enjoyment, as long as you get back to it and string together days and weeks of on plan eating together.
Since one meal doesn't matter in your long term focus, you can stop beating yourself up about it and get on with the task of stringing together more days of success.
When it comes to restricting calories so that you burn more and create that deficit, you don't necessarily have to count every single calorie that you consume day after day. Try eating every four hours in smaller portions and including a lot of vegetables and fresh fruits into each meal. Balance that with small portions of lean meats and whole grain carbs and you will naturally start restricting calories without going hungry.
Finally, never pass up a chance to move your body even if it seems petty or useless. The more you move, the more calories you burn, and ultimately the more weight you will lose.
