Weight Loss for Teenage Girls - A Parents' Guide

Today, there is an increasing number of overweight teenage girls who are at risk from high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels or Type 2 Diabetes, as well as having a negative self image of themselves, which will continue as they grow into adulthood.

However, the good news is, weight loss for teenage girls is easy if parents can help by teaching these teenage girls to have healthier behaviors, eating habits as well as participating in the physical activities to help them lose weight.

However, it is advised that any program that will lead to weight loss for teenage girls should only be attempted with medical approval.  The best course of action is to do it gradually and avoid a drastic reduction of weight.

The 4 steps below should give you some ideas of how to help your teenage girl lose weight.

1.  Assess the Health of Your Child

Before you start making changes to your teenage girl’s life, take note of what your home life is like.  If she is allowed to lead a sedentary life, and often over eat, you should address these areas of her life first.

If you find that your teenage girl is spending too much time in front of the television or computer, try to reduce this by half.

Make it a rule that, all food (including snacks) can only be eaten in the kitchen or the dining room.  Such small changes have been shown to significantly reduce the amount of over eating at home.

Next, you should stock up your fridge with snacks of higher nutritional value, such as fresh fruit and vegetables.

2.  Do Not Shame your Child into Losing Weight

An overweight teenage girl knows that she weighs too much.  But what she doesn’t know is how to attain a normal weight. It will definitely be comforting for her to know that you love her, whether she is fat, thin or normal.

To master the fine art of maintaining your teenage girl’s self-esteem while helping her to lose weight can be difficult.  Any parent must learn to “give time” and believe that the lessons you teach will one day come to fruition.

3. Participating in Physical Activities as a Family

This is a great way of breaking the monotony of the lives that many families lead. When you arrange physical activities, like walking or cycling, that involve the whole family, they not only bring about weight loss for teenage girls, but also serve as great opportunities for parents and child communication.

4. How to encourage the right sort of behavior in your teenage girl

One of the best ways that will lead to weight loss for teenage girls is through your own behavior.  Teens often do as adults do, rather than what you tell them.

For example, you should not ask their child to turn off the TV or to stop using the computer when you are spending hours surfing the net.  Nor should you restrict the food she eats, while you do not watch what you are eating. 

When you can achieve the above 4 steps, you should be able to help your teenage girl lose weight and lead a healthier life style. When it is done with lots of love and encouragement, the end result will be well worth the effort.
