What is metabolism and how to increase metabolic rate ?

Metabolism is a process of chemical reactions that take place within the cells of living organisms to drive the energy from one form to another form. Every living organism carries a series of chemical reactions to build their cell structure to grow. Enzymes drive the chemical reactions to transfer one form of energy into another to maintain the survival of living beings. This enzyme plays an important role in driving metabolic pathways to produce chemical reactions in living organisms and also controls the flow rate of chemical reactions depending on the need of energy by the organs and tissues.

Metabolism is grouped into two divisions , Catabolism and the other is Anabolism. Catabolism is one of the part of metabolism pathways which breaks the organic matter (large molecules) into smaller groups for the release of energy into the cells. Anabolism is a set of metabolic pathways tends to grow up the organs and tissues by utilizing the energy produced by the break up of organic matter by catabolism. The living organism gains weight and growth if the Anabolism pathway exceeds Catabolism and similarly the living organism losses weight if Catabolism pathway exceeds Anabolism. And dynamic equilibrium is achieved when both the metabolic pathways are balanced.

Metabolism targets three basic classes of organic matter (molecules) like Amino acids, Lipids and Carbohydrates for making and breaking of these molecules for the source of energy to grow the cell structures. Amino acids, proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, Coenzymes, Minerals and Nucleotides are the key biomolecules used by the enzymes to make chemical reactions for transfer of energy from one form to required form.

How to increase metabolic rate: Metabolism rate depends on the following factors.

  • Body Structure
  • Age
  • Schedule/activities
  • Food Intake

If the metabolism rate increases, more calories are burned and energy is consumed in high rate. So if you want to lose weight increase your metabolism rate by following these steps.

  • Build Strong Muscles: Having lean muscles helps in consuming more calories and stores sufficient energy for later use.
  • Do not avoid meals: skipping meals regularly doesn’t increase your metabolism rate and more over causes illness and fatigue.
  • Avoid taking diet pills and Alcohol: Using diet pills without proper precautions causes damage to the internal digestive system and brings more health related problems. Diet supplement pills are not clinically approved to increase the metabolism rate and more over causes damage to dynamic equilibrium. Avoid alcohol as it decreases the metabolism rate.
  • Go for aerobic workout: Do aerobics regularly to increase your metabolism rate and loose more weight within short time.
  • Maintain adequate protein in the diet: Try to take high protein content food so that less calories of energy will be stored inside and it will be easy to consume this energy within short time.
  • Have frequent small meals: Having small meals doesn’t make you to gain more weight and more over dynamic equilibrium will be in stable condition.
  • Regular water intake: Regular water intake really helps in increasing the metabolism rate at constant level.
  • Walking: Going for this walking exercise daily helps in getting good metabolism rate in shorter period of time.
  • Having adequate sleep: having adequate sleep really helps in improving the metabolism rate at constant speed. Having sound sleep makes the body to attain dynamic equilibrium.
